It must be something you already have wondered about: can body lotion be used on the face? What would happen if you did? Why are products specially designed for the face and others for the body? There are many things to learn about different moisturizers and lotions.
Calypso Cavallo tells you everything you need to know about this matter.
Can body lotion be used on the face?
Many people looking to save money on beauty products have wondered if they could use body lotion on their face, as this product is typically sold in larger containers for a lower price than facial products. Is it a good idea?
It is not the idea of the year as ingredients that works well on your arm and legs may cause skin problem to the delicate skin of your face. It is even more accurate when it comes to exfoliating products. We should never use the ones made for the body on the face as it is too abrasive and could damage the skin. It may cause various side effects, including dryness, redness, burning or stinging, and irritations. It may also trigger skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis in people who tend to suffer from them.
Using body lotion on the face when we have acne-prone skin triggers breakouts, as the ingredients are too heavy and tend to clog pores, especially those used in hand lotions. Avoid using products on your face that contain coconut oil or shea butter, as they are known (among others) for clogging pores and making breakouts. Although, they are excellent moisturizers for your body, especially if you have drier skin.
People with sensitive skin should avoid using body lotion on their face as they are often scented or dyed, which increases the risk of allergic reaction on the thin skin of the face, especially around the eyes.
The body lotion has been tested for body use, not facial use, slightly different as the sensitivity and skin thickness differ.
Using your body lotion on your face because you are away and forgot your facial cream is no big deal. It won’t ruin your skin if it happens once or twice. However, it is not an appropriate way to save money if you want radiant and healthy skin.
So, can body lotion be used on the face? It is not the best to do.
To get the best skin possible, use non-comedogenic, gentle facial products. Using an SPF-containing facial moisturizer is interesting as it prevents UV light-induced skin damage. It is also a good idea to check for nasty ingredients as some are linked with cancer.
Why are there different products for different body parts?
Can body lotion be used on the face? Now we know it is not the best, let’s take a closer look at the body parts and their needs.
The skin is one big organ but has different thicknesses and sensitivity across the body. Other body parts have different needs. Hand lotion is the thickest as our hands get dry easily. Hand lotion contains heavy moisturizing ingredients and emollients to lock the moisture into the skin, preventing it from getting dry. The same goes for feet. The rest of the body has relatively thick skin and needs a rich lotion to keep it hydrated. Many women enjoy using scented body lotion.
Finally, the face has the most sensitive skin in the body. The face is prone to various skin issues such as acne or fine lines and needs to be treated with care and appropriate products. Facial treatments contain ingredients that would have no point in being used on other body parts, such as salicylic acid or collagen.
