There are tons of skincare products, and brands constantly release new ones. Every year, people spend more and more money on skincare. The question is: are skincare products worth it?
Calypso Cavallo tells you everything you need to know!
Are skincare products worth it?
Skincare requires two main things: money to buy the products and time and discipline to apply them to your skin every day. Are skincare products worth it? If you buy expensive products and use them consistently on your skin, will you have radiant skin?
The products and the way you use them are two separate things. The most expensive, beauty guru-acclaimed skincare products can do nothing for your skin if they stand on your bathroom shelf and you never use them!
A good thing to know about skin care products is that the price does not always define the quality or the effectiveness.
Skincare products are worth it if they are appropriately selected according to your skin and needs. Oily and dry skin do not need the same active ingredients; swapping them worsens the condition.
Before going shopping (either online or in-store) for skincare products, know your skin type. You can check our full article to learn more about skin types and their needs.
The only way to make skincare work is to have a routine you repeat twice a day, morning and evening. This routine always starts with cleansing to remove oil or dirt. Then comes moisturizing with active ingredients to help with either oil excess or dryness. If you don’t stick with your routine, no skincare products will be worth it!
The pricier the better?
It is a common misconception about skin care products: the more expensive, the better. Actually, the most important with skincare products is not the price, it is the ingredients. The priciest skin care products do not always contain the best ingredients. The price depends more on the brand’s popularity and image than the actual products’ quality.
Packaging and marketing have a huge impact on the products’ price. Brands doing massive marketing campaigns make you pay for it when you buy the product. To get better deals, go for less known brands that focus and quality rather than popularity.
The most expensive skincare products, such as the ones from famous luxury brands often contain fragrances, which may cause allergies to sensitive skins.
The best way to pick your skincare products is not to go for the most expensive ones, but to check the ingredient list for active ingredients and to avoid nasty ones.
If the priciest skincare products are not always the best, the cheapest ones rarely contain good quality ingredients. It is better to avoid them because they may be inefficient at best, and harmful at worse.
Are skincare products worth it? Know when to splurge!
Even if reasonably priced products can be good, there are some types it is better to spend more on.
Your beauty routine starts with a cleanser. There is no need to spend tons of money on this product. Its goal is to remove oil and dirt from your skin. You rinse it, so it ends up in your bathroom sink drain…
You can go for a reasonably priced cleanser, as long as it does not contain any nasty ingredients, that you do not have a bad reaction to it, and it lets your skin feel comfortable after use.
Then, you use a moisturizer. It is sensible to spend a bit more on this product as it must contain active ingredients and stays in your skin. As a general rule, more expensive products have higher potency because it contains more active ingredients than cheaper ones.
The product you should be spending the most on is serum because it penetrates deeper into the skin to deliver active ingredients.
