Most of us have seen influencers and beauty gurus putting their skincare products in mini-fridges. Why? Are skincare products better cold? Are we damaging our skincare products by storing them at room temperature? Are they skincare products that we should not store in the fridge?
Calypso Cavallo tells you everything you need to know!
Are skincare products better cold?
Mini skincare fridges are all the rage on social media. Those influencers and ads pretend that skincare products would be more efficient if kept chilled. Is it true? Are skincare products better cold, or is it just a way to make us buy more stuff?
We can store most skin care products at room temperature. Those we must keep in the fridge have a note about this on their packaging. However, maintaining skincare products refrigerated can enhance their action. It does not affect the ingredients themselves, but applying something cold to the face reduces puffiness and makes you feel better because it helps the blood to circulate better. It is the same as putting cold water on heavy legs on a hot day.
Gel or water-based skincare products can be kept in the fridge. There is no need to buy a mini-fridge for skincare products; your kitchen fridge is enough unless you store stinky foods. However, a skincare mini-fridge can be an excellent gift for skincare enthusiasts.
A study showed that using colder products decreased sebum production.
Storing products containing certain ingredients in the fridge helps keep them stable longer, increasing the product’s life span.
We must store all skincare products containing probiotics in a cool environment.
What skincare products should be refrigerated?
Here is the list of the skincare products that are more efficient if kept cold.
- Vitamine C serum
Vitamine C is sensitive to temperature variation. Storing those products in the fridge (either kitchen fridge or skincare mini-fridge) helps the ingredients remain stable.

- Eye cream
Keeping your eye cream in the fridge does not do much for its shelf life, but it dramatically increases its efficiency, as applying cold under the eyes reduces puffiness and helps with dark circles. Cold eye cream is the best ally to get rid of tired eyes.
Eyepatch can be stored in the fridge, too.
- Arnica
Arnica is a herb well-known for helping with bruising. Chilling arnica treatment boosts its vasoconstricting abilities and makes it more efficient to avoid visible bruises.
- Face roller
Face rollers are the best to get a quick depuff of the skin, you know, after that night out drinking mojitos with your friends. Keeping it in the fridge is excellent, but a face roller is one of the only products you can store in your freezer. The colder, the better!
- All cooling, soothing, or anti-inflammatory skincare products
Keeping those products in the fridge will boost their potential. The best are gel-based formulas kept in the refrigerator. They contain more water than creams and feel more refreshing and depuffing.
Those products work wonders on stressed skin or after a too-long exposition to the sun. Cooled aloe vera is a life-saver for sunburns.
What skincare products shoud not be refrigerated?
Storing some skin care products in the fridge is beneficial. However, oil-based skincare products should be stored at room temperature, as most oils solidify at colder temperatures. Oil-based skincare products can ruin them as the oil solidifies and the ingredients separate.
Moreover, if we can store most products in the fridge, they should not be stored in the freezer, as extreme temperatures would ruin their formula and make them inefficient.
