What is eczema?
Eczema is a widespread yet excruciating chronic skin condition. There are several types of eczema: some are triggered by contact with a specific component (contact dermatitis), while others are a symptom of allergic reactions to food or common allergens such as pollen or acarids. Stress is also a common trigger, and people suffering from eczema can be very challenged with their mental health from both the underlying stress cause and the constant pain and distress the condition causes.

How to know what causes your eczema flare-ups?
Your skin is rough, dry, and painful, and a clear liquid may leak; you most likely are experiencing an eczema flare-up. What does cause it? The main issue with this skin condition is that so many things may trigger it is complicated to identify the cause. They are different for everyone and maybe a combination of several things.
It is very confusing for people who suffer from eczema and are trying to find their triggers. Some things alone may not cause a flare-up, but they do if combined with other things. For example, A/C may not cause a flare-up by itself, but if you get stressed and eat tomatoes, you get itchy and rough skin.
The best way to know your triggers is to start with an allergy checkup. It is a small, painless test carried out by an allergy specialist. Ezcema is a common symptom of allergic reactions.
Eczema may also be caused by shower gels, shampoos, lotions, dish soaps, or laundry detergents. The best way to sort out which ones cause flare-ups is to stop using one product for a week or two. If nothing changes, resume the use and stop using or switch another product.
However, there are some cases when the person suffering from eczema cannot find the cause.
Do and don't during a eczema flare up
“I have tried everything to cure or soothe my eczema,” Calypso Cavallo says. “From coconut oil to Dead Sea mud, lemon juice or Epsom salt.”
There are tons of homemade remedies for eczema available online. However, most do more harm than good. If you are dealing with eczema, the first thing to do is to discuss the subject with your health care provider and consult a dermatologist. They will prescribe you a cortisone-containing ointment that will be useful to protect your skin during flare-ups.
“I was reluctant to use cortisone cream for years,” Calypso Cavallo said. “I heard the skin could get addicted and need higher and higher doses to stop itching. While this is partially true, those ointments are essential to prevent the condition from spreading and protect the skin”.
Cortisone-containing ointments are not moisturizers. It would help if you built a strong moisturizing routine for yourself. Creams containing ceramides are great for moisture rough and dry skins. Shea butter is an excellent emollient to seal the moisture inside the skin.
Depending on where your flare-up is located, getting rid of it can be extra hard. Ezcema located on hands is challenging because our hands are constantly exposed to elements and chemicals such as dish soaps and cleaning products. Always wear rubber gloves when cleaning your house or doing the dishes. Buy a special soap or oil to wash your hand, and never forget to moisturize after every washing to prevent your skin from getting even rougher and dryer.
